About the Project

​

What if you didn't just watch Romeo & Juliet? What if you stepped inside Verona?

WhatNot Theatrics presents an immersive adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet set in Verona, Italy, in 1913. Rather than sitting in a theatre watching the story unfold in front of you, audiences will enter the world of Verona and encounter its characters throughout Seattle's historic Stimson-Green Mansion.

 

This is an adaptation rooted in Shakespeare's original text, while expanding the world beyond the traditional scenes and allowing the audience to experience the story from many different perspectives.

What We're Looking For

​

This is a little different from a traditional Shakespeare production and that's what makes it fun. Audiences will enter the world of Verona and encounter characters throughout the mansion, with multiple stories and interactions unfolding around them. You don't need previous immersive theatre experience. We're looking for actors who are curious, playful, responsive, and excited to create a world with an audience.

 

Casting Philosophy

All roles are open to performers of any gender.

The gender of the character as written does not need to match the gender of the performer. Women may audition for roles written as men, men may audition for roles written as women, nonbinary performers are encouraged to audition for any role that interests them, etc.

We're interested in finding the right performer for each character, rather than limiting casting based on gender.

 

Performers of all genders, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

You may audition for multiple roles. If you're interested in more than one character, please indicate that when you sign up.

LORD MONTAGUE

Male, 40s–60s

Patriarch of the Montague family, Lord Montague is a proud and protective husband and father. With his wife gravely ill and Romeo increasingly distant, he struggles to hold his family together while navigating the generations-old feud with the Capulets.

​

LADY MONTAGUE

Female, 40s–60s

Lady Montague is gravely ill and spends much of the story confined to her bed. Despite her physical limitations, she remains a powerful presence within the Montague family, with opportunities to use movement, physicality, and emotional presence to connect with the audience.

​

Preferred Skill: Movement or dance

​

LORD CAPULET

Male, 50s–60s

Patriarch of the Capulet family. Charismatic, commanding, and fiercely protective of his family's reputation and legacy. His love for Juliet exists alongside his expectations of her, creating a complicated and increasingly volatile relationship.

​

BENVOLIO

Male, 20s–30s

Romeo's cousin and closest friend. Intelligent, compassionate, and frequently attempting to prevent the Montague boys from escalating the feud. Benvolio is both an observer of Verona's chaos and someone deeply affected by it.

ABRAM

Male, 20s–40s

A member of the Montague household caught up in the family's ongoing conflict with the Capulets.

PETER

Male, 20s–50s

A lively and personable Capulet servant who knows the household well. Warm, quick-witted, and socially nimble, Peter moves easily between the Capulet family and the world around them.

​​

SAMPSON

Male, 20s–40s

A Capulet servant and provocateur. Quick to take offense and eager to defend the Capulet name, Sampson embodies the inherited hostility of Verona's feud.

GREGORY

Male, 20s–40s

A Capulet servant and Sampson's partner in provoking the Montagues. Witty, mischievous, and eager to participate in the family's ongoing conflict.

FRIAR LAWRENCE

Male, 40s–60s

A Franciscan friar and trusted confidant to Romeo. Compassionate and thoughtful, Friar Laurence believes he can use Romeo and Juliet's love to bring peace to Verona. His attempts to guide events ultimately place him at the center of the tragedy.

​​

PARIS

Male, 20s–50s

A nobleman and prospective husband for Juliet. Polished, confident, socially connected, and accustomed to moving comfortably through Verona's highest social circles.

PRINCE ESCALUS

Male, 40s–60s

The Prince of Verona and the city's ultimate authority. Responsible for maintaining peace between the Montagues and Capulets, he is a commanding figure whose presence should carry weight throughout the world of the production.

Audition sides are available on this website.

Auditions will be approximately 10 minutes and conducted via Zoom. A reader will be provided.

The rehearsal process will combine Zoom and in-person rehearsals in Seattle.
